Double-Handled Bushel

White Oak Basket, 14" x 14" x 11.5" (18" at opening)
Made in class with Mary Ann and Bill Smith
John C. Campbell Folk School, Brasstown, NC

This basket was made starting from the tree to what you see here. I started with a white oak log, split that, and split it again, and again, and again. Once pieces are split, a shaving knife is used to control the thickness of the uprights and weavers. The handles and skids (protective pieces on the base) were hand-carved of white oak heartwood. The design of this basket is my own, and represents a compilation of a number of traditional carrying baskets.
